The fungal disease, Necrotic Ring Spot (NRS), is likely the worst disease we deal with in lawns, and if you find these rings in your yard, you would agree.
In recent years, Moore Green recommended over-seeding infected lawns with grass varieties that are resistant to NRS instead of applying fungicides because of the expense of the products and their short working life. While Moore Green continues to recommend over-seeding, there are two new tools available for working with NRS.
- New Combo Fungicides: Moore Green has tested some newer ‘combo’ fungicides that contain two or more fungicides with different modes of action and has had good results in slowing the spread of NRS. Timing is critical for the needed two applications, beginning in late spring.
- Special Blended Fertilizer: Nutrients targeting the effects of NRS encourages the lawn to fill in the dead rings, lessen the yellowing, and temporarily change the soil pH to stop the fungal growth. This product can be applied at any time to help hide those rings.
These targeted treatments can be added to your existing lawn care program to help combat Necrotic Ring Spot. They are still recommended to perform them every year as one treatment or a year’s worth of treatment will not completely eradicate this horrible turf disease.
