How much does it cost to use a lawn service?
When considering lawn care, you inevitably arrive at the question – How much does it cost to use a commercial lawn care service? Although this can be difficult to answer because not all lawns or their needs are the same, I will do my best at explaining some pricing guidelines.
The most obvious pricing factor is the size of the lawn, which is measured in square feet or by the acre and is calculated by measuring the length and the width and multiplying them together. A 20,000 square foot lawn will cost more than a 5,000 square foot lawn. What may not be as obvious is that a 5,000 square foot lawn may not be half the price of a 10,000 square foot lawn. This is because the lawn service company must charge for the time to travel to each property and perform duties like loading product, cleaning off sidewalks, reeling up a hose, doing paperwork, etc. that takes roughly the same time regardless of the size of a lawn. Moore Green has a minimum charge of $47.00 per treatment.
The next factor to consider are the ‘ingredients’ of a lawn treatment. A single treatment may contain fertilizer, weed control, weed preventer, insect controls, fungicides, wetting agents, and/or other products to help with the application. A fertilizer combined with weed control and a weed preventer may cost more due to the ingredients; however, time, which can be the highest expense, can be saved by doing one application instead of performing three separate applications.
In my 30+ years of experience, a yearly program has more value than a single, one-time treatment. Moore Green averages the cost of the treatments for the year to make the treatments more affordable and simple to understand. Purchasing a one-time treatment may cost up to 30% or more because of the changing ingredients over the course of a year. A yearly program will provide consistent results and call backs are free whereas a single application cannot be guaranteed and service calls will be billed with a minimum charge.
With this in mind, the average yearly price for an average lawn (up to 6,000 sq ft) on our BASIC 6 Application Program is between $300 – $375, or $50 – $60 a treatment. A 10,000 sq ft is around $500 a year. Moore Green’s BASIC program consists of 6 fertilizer treatments, spring weed preventer, weed control throughout the year, soil wetting agent, and free service calls.
