Here it is late October and the temperatures are cooler and the days are shorter. It’s tempting to skip the final fertilizer treatment of the year and startup again next spring. Besides, what does it matter what the lawn looks like over the winter months?
It’s not an issue of having the greenest lawn during the winter, in fact, we want the grass to go dormant to protect it. While you may not see a lot of growth in the lawn, the grass grows like gang busters under the soil. The grass is growing roots in order to store nutrients. Fertilizing in late October through November gives the lawn the necessary nutrients to have a successful green up in the spring.A healthy root system is what our lawn needs to prepare itself for the hot summer temperatures. Consider aerating late in the year before the soil is too wet to really help the root system thicken up. So think twice before skipping the last fertilizer of the year.
